RALEIGH, N.C. – As the debris is being cleared and buildings repaired, disaster recovery for people continues with a special state outreach program calledNC on the Road to Resilience.”

If you are suffering as a result of the April 16 storms and tornadoes and want to talk with someone about it, you can call a special toll-free number – 866-451-7760. The line is staffed from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. seven days a week.

“NC on the Road to Resilience” will have a community presence, with specially trained workers wearing bright yellow vests and driving cars with magnetic signs identifying the program.

“They will go door to door and to town meetings, talk to civic groups, go to community centers and churches,” said Maxine Terry of the state’s division of mental health, who is the project manager for “NC on the Road to Resilience.”

Terry is overseeing 55 men and women who have been trained and hired to walk the streets and knock on doors to see how folks are doing in their recovery from the storms and tornadoes.

“Our people are trained to identify disaster-related needs and make referrals to local, state and federal resources,” Terry said. “We can help families and identify sources for counseling assistance.”

This effort is funded by a $635,000 Federal Emergency Management Agency Crisis Counseling grant. The state’s application included 11 counties that agreed to participate: Bladen, Cumberland, Halifax, Harnett, Hoke, Johnston, Lee, Onslow, Robeson, Sampson and Wake. Residents of a non-participating county who call the toll-free number will be referred to available services in their county.

FEMA’s mission is to support our citizens and first responders to ensure that as a nation we work together to build, sustain, and improve our capability to prepare for, protect against, respond to, recover from, and mitigate all hazards.
